The Illusion That Our Thoughts Control Our Actions

One of the key insights that we want our clients to understand experientially is that our thoughts do not control our actions. Thoughts have a lot of influence on our actions when we fuse with them; they have much less influence when we defuse. Once clients understand this, it enables us to do brief interventions such as these:

Client: I don’t think I can do it.

Therapist: Can you have that thought and do it anyway?

***

Client: I just know this is going to turn out badly.

Therapist: Well, that’s what your mind’s going to tell you. Can you let your mind tell you that, and still go ahead with it?

The transcripts that follow highlight a more realistic view of the relationship among thoughts, feelings, and actions. They’re written as we might deliver them to our clients.
